Why is my C: drive full when I can't find what is using the space?

On developer machines the space is usually trapped in places Windows' own tools don't explain: the WSL2 ext4.vhdx virtual disk, Docker Desktop's virtual disks, package caches, node_modules folders, build output, and IDE caches. SpaceFree scans for exactly these locations and shows how much each one holds.

Why doesn't my WSL2 disk shrink after I delete files?

The WSL2 virtual disk (ext4.vhdx) grows as you write data but doesn't automatically shrink when you delete it, so Windows keeps the space. It has to be compacted. SpaceFree includes a compaction wizard for WSL2 and Docker virtual disks, and our guide on the topic walks through the manual steps.

What does SpaceFree actually delete?

Nothing without your say-so. Every scan shows you what's safe to delete, what's rebuildable, and what it won't touch, before anything happens. Deletions go to the Windows Recycle Bin by default, so a mistake is always recoverable. Permanent delete is opt-in.

Question 5

Can SpaceFree clean node_modules, package caches and build folders?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It finds node_modules inside your projects, caches from npm, pnpm, Yarn, pip, Conda, NuGet, Cargo, Gradle, Maven and Go, and build output such as .next, dist, build and target folders, and marks which ones are safe to rebuild.

Does SpaceFree upload my files or scan results anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. Scanning, analysis, and cleanup all happen locally on your machine. Nothing about your file names, folder structure, or contents is ever sent anywhere. The only network requests are for license activation and checking for app updates.

Is SpaceFree safe to install?

Accepted Answer

The Microsoft Store version comes from a verified publisher and installs without security warnings. The direct .exe installer is also available, and Windows may show a standard unrecognized-app warning during setup. Everything runs locally and deletions go to the Recycle Bin by default.

How is SpaceFree different from WizTree, TreeSize or WinDirStat?

How many devices can I use one license on?

Each license key activates on one device at a time. If you need it on a different machine, deactivate it from Settings on the old one first.

SpaceFree will ask you to activate a lifetime license key to keep going. Your scan history and settings stay put. Nothing is lost, you just need a key to continue.

Purchases are processed by Dodo Payments as merchant of record, so refunds are handled under their Buyer Terms, generally at their discretion on a case-by-case basis.
